our history

Sarofim Foundation was established by FAYEZ SAROFIM, prior to his death, in gratitude for the opportunities this country and Houston provided him as an emigrant from his native Egypt.

Throughout his life Mr. Sarofim exhibited an unshakable faith in what was possible through a steadfast and a disciplined approach to excellence, hard work and trust in others. These are the same principles that guide Sarofim Foundation forward today.

With a relentless optimism that would characterize his approach throughout his lifetime, Mr. Sarofim founded Fayez Sarofim & Co. in 1958, to become the largest investment advisory firm in the Southwest. Quietly, patiently, and with a consistent vision anchored in his belief in “betting on people as the most important thing,” early clients included many non-profits, endowments, and foundations that shaped his personal philanthropic vision. The result of his generosity has had a significant, lasting impact on the Houston community and beyond, particularly in education, healthcare and the arts.

Currently, the Foundation’s leadership is engaged in a strategic planning process to define its approach and role as one of Houston’s largest philanthropic entities. The Sarofim Foundation Board is honored to build on Mr. Sarofim’s history of investing in our community in powerful, intentional ways.

Frequently asked questions

ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND

Does the Sarofim Foundation currently exist?

In the early 1970’s, Mr. Sarofim established a personal trust for philanthropic giving. As an expression of gratitude for the many opportunities Houston provided him in his lifetime, he chose to replace this trust with a new Sarofim Foundation that will exist in perpetuity. This new nonprofit corporation will be among Houston’s largest foundations and carry forward his philanthropic legacy.

Is this a family foundation?

Mr. Sarofim established that family members will always be a part of the Foundation, but the new entity is not exclusively a family foundation.

Who is on the Board?

Currently, the Board consists of Mr. Christopher Sarofim, Mrs. Raye White and Mr. Gentry Lee.

What is the connection between Fayez Sarofim & Co. and the Sarofim Foundation?

The new Sarofim Foundation is a separate entity. Fayez Sarofim & Co. will manage the Foundation’s investment strategy, as it does for so many other foundations and non-profits nationwide.

PLANNING

What are the Foundation’s giving parameters?

We are currently engaged in a strategic process to determine how the Sarofim Foundation will focus its future giving strategy. We anticipate we will align with a wide range of long-term opportunities to benefit our community.

Will your grants continue to primarily benefit the City of Houston?

During his lifetime, Mr. Sarofim expressed deep appreciation and gratitude for all that the city of Houston offered him. We remain proud Houstonians and anticipate partnering with institutions led by trustworthy teams who can untap potential and deliver excellence.

How large is The Sarofim Foundation?

The Sarofim Foundation, when fully operational, will be among the largest philanthropic organizations based in Houston.

Will you look to make only large, transformational grants?

We will have a balanced approach in funding grants of various size that are clearly aligned with achieving long-term impact in our community.

How do I know if my non-profit would qualify for a Sarofim grant?

Once we have a clear framework for our giving strategy, we will communicate parameters for grant submissions.

Are you currently taking grant submissions? If not, when do you anticipate doing so? If so, how do I submit?

We are not accepting unsolicited requests for funding as we establish our operations as a new nonprofit entity. We will clearly communicate our grantmaking criteria and processes when we are ready to do so. In the interim, we will continue to fund legacy grants and grantee organizations at the Board’s discretion.
